Mmaobi Nwafor-Orizu is the Founder of Synia Aid Foundation (SAF), a humanitarian and development-focused organization established in December 2018 to address poverty, inequality, and social exclusion among vulnerable populations in Nigeria. Driven by a profound commitment to social justice, human dignity, and sustainable development, Mmaobi founded SAF with the vision of creating a society where indigent persons, particularly Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), have access to education, empowerment opportunities, and safe living conditions.
A trained legal professional, Mmaobi holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Economic Law from Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom. Her academic background, coupled with her passion for humanitarian service, has shaped her approach to addressing complex social challenges through advocacy, education, and community-driven development initiatives.
The inspiration behind Synia Aid Foundation emerged from Mmaobi's extensive research into the conditions faced by internally displaced persons in Nigeria. While studying law, she undertook a research project titled "Conditions of Persons Internally Displaced by Conflict and Natural Disaster: The UN Perspective and the Need for More Protective Legislation in Nigeria." This work exposed her to the realities of displacement, poverty, and systemic inequality affecting millions of vulnerable Nigerians. Motivated by the urgent need for practical interventions, she transformed her academic insights into action through the establishment of Synia Aid Foundation.
Under her leadership, SAF was built on the conviction that poverty can be effectively addressed through three interconnected pillars: educational sponsorship, entrepreneurial empowerment, and provision of shelter. Mmaobi strongly believes that education is the most powerful instrument for liberation and social transformation. Guided by the philosophy that "to educate the mind is to liberate it," she has positioned education as the cornerstone of the Foundation's mission to break cycles of poverty and create sustainable opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
As Founder, Mmaobi has provided strategic direction for the Foundation's growth and development. She has championed initiatives aimed at expanding access to formal and informal education, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, mental health awareness, and humanitarian relief services. Her leadership philosophy emphasizes partnership with communities, recognizing that lasting solutions emerge when vulnerable populations are empowered to participate actively in identifying challenges and shaping responses to them.
Mmaobi's vision extends beyond providing temporary assistance. She advocates for long-term, systemic solutions that address the root causes of poverty and social exclusion. Through Synia Aid Foundation, she has consistently promoted community ownership, capacity development, and sustainable interventions designed to create lasting social impact. Her approach reflects a commitment to empowering individuals and communities rather than fostering dependency.
Since the Foundation's establishment, Mmaobi has overseen several outreach and humanitarian initiatives, including charity drives, awareness campaigns, medical outreach programs, and support projects targeting vulnerable women, children, and internally displaced persons.
